To visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphan.”

At the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder Science Cafe gathering over a month ago, I met a man who I must call a good neighbor.

During the break, he and I began talking about Bees, and he shared a story about his own Bee colony collapse experience.  At one point he said that he hadn’t been to his Beekeeper meetings for a few years because of his cemetery meetings.  Interested, I said: Cemetery meetings?

One Sunday eve I was riding around downtown on my bike just full of energy, wishing I had something to do, when far off in the distance I heard it: drumming, fairly rhythmic/polyrhythmic drumming.
I followed the sound ‘til I got to the Cherry Street Loft, that huge open space now owned by Fishtale brewery. Then I remembered: yes, Samba Practice, Sunday eves, 5:00.

After several rainy days, Sunday the 17th of May brings blue skies and an unusual warm breeze, and I step out of the house blinking in wonder. Buses run from 18th ave to downtown every 15 minutes, but I prefer to walk through the capital campus. This morning a male in an orange reflective vest sits on a cooler on the opposite side of Capital.

A wonderful thing called Science Cafe is happening on second tuesdays each month at Barnes & Noble.  It is based on a model from the UK, where people with and without science backgrounds get together to hear about and discuss issues that affect their lives “locally as well as globally”.  This tuesday, I went to my first one because it was about Bees, and I love Bees.  Specifically, the presentation was about Bee Colony Collapse disorder.

I danced nervously in a strange kitchen, throwing my arms in the air, moving my legs without purpose. I wore only boxers and a t-shirt as a dog named Maggie stared at me lazily, softly chewing a plastic bone.

I had made it four hours without the internet. The first three hours I spent biking slow from Olympia to Tenino.

I expected rain. I was lucky it started halfway to my destination.

It was my longest bike ride ever: about 15 miles. By the end I was dripping with sweat and rainwater, my back angry and my legs shaking.
